SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Nearly 7,000 customers in San Francisco’s Western Addition and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods were briefly without power Thursday morning and almost 300 customers remained in the dark hours later, a PG&E spokesman said.

A power outage started at 5:24 a.m. after an underground equipment failure at Golden Gate Avenue and Fillmore Street. The outage knocked out power to 6,910 customers, spokesman JD Guidi said.

At 6:02 a.m. power was restored to all but 291 customers, who still have no power more than an hour later.

There was no estimate when power will be restored for remaining customers, Guidi said.

A San Francisco fire official said there was smoke coming from a manhole at Golden Gate Avenue and Fillmore Street at 5:32 a.m., which is related to the outage.

PG&E crews were at the scene, working to restore power, Guidi said.
